Ontario Home Renovation Rebates: Your Guide to the Home Renovation Savings Program

If you're confused by the ever-changing landscape of home energy incentives – you’re not alone!  This blog will explain everything you need to know about the latest Ontario government initiative, the Home Renovations Savings Program. This new program offers rebates on a range of home upgrades, replaces the HER+ program and brings back solar rebates.


Home Renovations Savings Program: What You Need to Know 


When did it launch? January 28th, 2025.   

Who can apply? Ontario homeowners. 

What's included? Upgrades are split into two categories, the first list you have to do at least two upgrades and get an Energuide Audit to be eligible for the rebate. The second, are stand-alone upgrades, and there's no Audit required to get the rebate.


Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program: Bundle Two Upgrades -  A list of eligible home upgrades for bundled rebates, including insulation, windows and doors, air sealing, and heat pump water heaters.

Bundle Upgrades:  

Choose at least two upgrades from this list and get an Energuide Audit to be eligible for rebates.

  • Insulation: This includes attic, basement, and exterior walls to receive up to $7,700 

  • Windows and doors: Install energy-efficient windows and doors and receive $100 per door and window 

  • Air sealing: Reduce those drafts and receive up to $250   

  • Heat Pump Water Heater: Install a qualified water heater and get $500 back 




Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program: Stand-alone Upgrades for Gas Heating - A checklist highlighting eligible individual upgrades for gas-heated homes, including air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, smart thermostats, and solar panels, with potential rebate savings indicated.

Stand-alone Upgrades:  

No Audit Required


If you heat with gas:

  • Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump: up to $2,000 back, ($500/ ton)

  • Ground Source Heat Pump:  If you've got the space, receive up to $3,000 

  • Smart Thermostat: Control your home temperature and receive $75 back   

  • Solar panels and battery storage: up to $10,000 (net metering not permitted, new installations only)



Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program: Stand-alone Upgrades for Electric Heating - A checklist highlighting eligible individual upgrades for electric-heated homes, including air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, smart thermostats, and solar panels, with potential rebate savings indicated.


If you heat with electricity:

  • Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump: up to $7,500 back, ($1,250/ ton)

  • Ground Source Heat Pump:  receive up to $12,000 ($2,000/ ton)

  • Smart Thermostat: Control your home temperature and receive $75 back   

  • Solar panels and battery storage: up to $10,000 







How does the Program Work? 

The bundled option requires an energy assessment, which means that you can stack with the other programs detailed below. The stand-alone items don't require an audit.



Other Programs and Rebates

Government of Canada logo:  Representing federal support for the Canada Greener Homes Loan program, which provides interest-free financing for energy-efficient home upgrades.

Canada Greener Homes Loan: $40,000 at 0% interest for energy efficiency upgrades: In the 2024 Fall Economic Statement, the government announced it would increase funding for interest-free loans through this program. 

Government of Canada logo:  Highlighting the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, which provides no-cost energy-efficient retrofits for eligible homeowners and renters, starting mid-2025.

Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program: No cost retrofits for low-to median-income homeowners and renters announced in 2024. The government is relying on provincial partners to deliver the programs starting mid-2025. 

City of Toronto logo:  Showcasing the City of Toronto's HELP program, offering low-interest loans and rebates to help homeowners make energy-efficient upgrades.

City of Toronto HELP: up to $125,000 loan at low interest rates plus rebates for heat pumps, solar and $10k for Deep Energy Retrofits.  This program is stackable with the Greener Homes Loan and the Home Renovation Savings programs.

City of Ottawa logo:  Representing the Better Homes Ottawa Loan Program (BHOLP), which offers financial assistance to homeowners for energy-efficient upgrades, including low- and no-interest loans and rebates for heat pumps.

City of Ottawa BHOLP:  Better Homes Ottawa Loan program offering up to $125,000 with low and no interest depending on income with rebates for heat pumps. This program is stackable with the Greener Homes Loan and the Home Renovation Savings programs.
